Mourning doves are buffy-tan colored with long, pointed tail feathers.

The 12-gauge shotgun is the most widely used firearm to hunt doves.

Range & Habitat

Doves can be found from Central America to Canada and have even been spotted in Alaska. They prefer warm weather, and when temperatures drop doves will head south for better climates. They are abundant in agricultural regions where food, water and habitat are plentiful.

Doves prefer open areas such as grasslands and cultivated fields. Their population has increased with the cutting of woodland areas, which has opened up more of their desired habitat. They are commonly seen perched on power lines and fences during the daytime after spending the morning eating and collecting gravel. Like many birds, doves must collect gravel in order to grind up and digest food in their gizzard. They are also very common in cities and towns where they can find everything they need.
